RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - joost - Nov-12-2011 My username is my real name. It's pronounced 'Yoast'. RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - Farseer - Nov-12-2011 Yoast as in 'toast', joost? And here have I, all this time, been calling you juice-t! I'm ever so glad that I bumped this thread! RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - Farseer - Nov-13-2011 Thanks joost...and we promise not to use our power over you now that we know your 'true' name. I think this has been more of a "WOW!" moment than when I eventually learned that Mervi was a female and that the 'thul beings were all male! RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - fool-ish - Nov-13-2011 I read it as 'juiced.' No doubt I've been reading many others wrongly too. RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - KekPafrany - May-15-2012 Mine is Hungarian, and means Blue Fern. I have worn it for 12 years. I invented an alternative for the places where I couldn't use long names (f.e. on irc), it is Phylix, from the latin word Filix (meaning fern), but with fancy "greekish" letters (that time I begun the uni, and we all had hard time learning the the originating from latin and greek). But just as Valarya, I had to realize that it is a valid first name, and since the short user names are rarely needed, I write as Phyllitis (it is a kind of fern). Well... ferns and wolves are my weakness RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - Mervi - May-23-2012 I've heard the funniest pronounciations of my name during the last few months (and seen it written Merbi and Merwe even after spelling it out). I never guessed it is such a difficult name for native English speakers, after all you have the name Mervyn with all its variants. Basically you pronounce it as if you were going to say "merry" but switch the second r for a hard v as in "vintage". Easy as. RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - Farseer - May-23-2012 Okay, so this explains why I once assumed you were male...I call you Merv (like swerve) - ee, the same way as I would start Mervyn. I have to admit that it sounds kinda French the way you describe it (!), and I'd go if you said that to me here in Australia...and then I'd sweetly ask you to spell it for me...and then think, "Oh, Merv (like swerve) - ee but with an accent!" Likely it all comes down to accent as much as it does pronunciation...?! RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - KekPafrany - May-23-2012 Hmmm.. Mine should be prononcued as "Cake path run" - but the 'n' is like the 'n' in the word 'new', because 'ny' is a consonant in my language. RE: Where did you get your username from? (some RotE-ish spoilers) - Farseer - May-23-2012 Between here and Robin's Newsgroup, I am getting a thorough education on pronunciations of late! KekPafrany, I'm so glad that you shared yours...but, as for 'Yoast' instead of 'Joost' , it bends my mind in odd ways when I read the pronunciation of your name and then try to emulate it while looking at the spelling! I have been calling you Kek (like peck) - Paf (like gaff) - ran (like, I ran away) - ee (like tree or me)!! Likely I will never change the way I pronounce all of your names...I have had you labelled far too long in my mind like that to change now! Nope. Can't do it. Changing a horse mid-stream is impossible for me. |
