I am reading Brisingr having speed read through the previous two over the weekend. I am not sure I will finish it though- I don't care about any of the characters at all

My comments re Brisingr are way back here on this page - http://forums.theplenty.net/showthread.php?tid=12&pid=9086&highlight=Brisingr#pid9086

I read the bit you were talking about and was annoyed by it too.

I think I have spent too much time reading Robin Hobb/GRRM and now can't stand books in which a) 15 year olds are miraculously really good at handling magic powers b) stupid decisions don't have consequences and c) people constantly win battles against overwhelming odds Dodgy

You're right, this should only work when the odds are a million to one.

Thanks to you 'thul beings. That both helps and doesn't help! P

Joost, you do remember that in million-to-one chances, the one wins through nine out of ten times, right?

Wasn't that link useful, Farseer?

Odds of a million to one is one thing, jumping over things to kill multiple insane fearless soldiers and surviving is another...

"fearless" doesn't necessarily mean "good"...

Much of the imperial armies in Alagäesia were conscripts. Such people are not notorious for being over-trained.

Add in superhuman reflexes, strength and endurance, and the challenge is a rather bit higher for the enemy. Then throw in magic. Oh, and the hero/villain's goon factors.

An healthy amount of fear is just as important as any other attribute.

Besides, Eragon isn't 15 in the last two books... He's 17-18 in Brisingr, 19-20 in Inheritance... In a society where children have to grow up quickly, where they start learning adult-level skills in what would in our world be considered teens or even childhood, being fairly decent isn't unexpected at around 17-20 years.

Still on Wraeththu! I'll come back when I'm reading something else, eh? Wink
