Upgraded forum script & new features - Mervi - Sep-24-2008

As some of you might have noticed, the forum has been down for a couple of days as I was performing some upgrading. Things might still look a bit odd here and there, but I'm hoping to fix everything soon. Let me know if you run into really bad errors, like you can't edit your details or log in or write posts.

One of the new features is a plugin that hopefully allows you to browse this forum from your cellphone! I tested with my own poor old WAP thingy, and could get as far as browsing thread titles, but then I got an error message about "unknown file type" when I tried to access any actual threads. So if anyone wants to test this, let me know how it goes (so we know whether the problem was just with my old phone or with the actual plugin).

Cool! A mobile forum! Now I just need to get a new G1 Google Android.

Well, I just upgraded the mobile forum plugin and at least my old cell phone now only displays a blank page. Down If anyone else has better luck with their WAP phones here, let me know!

Anyway - I've added a few other small plugins (as well as upgraded the main script):

* you can now add your twitter account name to your profile. This will also display your latest tweet beside your username at the boards as a sort of a status. If you guys think this gets annoying/distracting just let me know and I'll disable it!

* same goes for gtalk (aka your gmail address which you can use as an IM account)

* you can now also translate any post here via the Google translation engine (except it seems to lack the translation TO English, I'm going to give the coder feedback about this Big Grin). There seems to be a bug where you can only translate a number of posts in the same thread before it stops working - just reload the page and it should be working again. Not sure if it's of any use, but I thought it was a fun addition.

* I've changed the spoiler code plugin since the old one wasn't supported any more. Basically you should now be able to hide even an behind the tag.
You can either write

which will create

or you can write

[spoiler=WARNING! CONTAINS HIGH LEVELS OF ELFBARK]This is a spoiler[/spoiler]
which will result in

Testing the video embed codes... Wink
Click on the YouTube button next to the font choices, paste the whole url of the video, ie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rys9fT5HDk - the code asks for width and height - you can leave those be as suggested and then just click ok. Smiling
Result:
[my-youtube width=425 height=344]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rys9fT5HDk[/my-youtube]

You can also embed MySpace videos by using the code

[myspace][/myspace]
and putting the id number between the tags (ONLY the number, not the whole url. So if the url is http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=9868345, the code would be

[myspace]9868345[/myspace]
Result:
[myspace]49037988[/myspace]
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=9868345

Sweet! I don't have a mobile phone that can get on the internet, but I like the YouTube embed feature and the spoiler feature. And, of course, great choice on Robin Hobb YouTube videos, that one's my favorite. Smiling

Have to test this new twitter thingy Smiling Not addicted, no. Can't find any nice smilies to add, guess I'm blocking them somehow? I do see the ones you've used Mervi and Chris, but not any to add.

edit: Looks like the Recently active forum topics on front page isn't working atm.

Yup, I noticed the same thing with the front page threads. I'll have to look into that later, I got some extra work shifts for the rest of the week. Sini, don't you see the new smilies on the left side of the message box at all, or only the old ones? There's also a "get more" link underneath the smilies box - this is the actual "post a new reply" page, not the "post quick reply" at the bottom of all threads.

Also, I believe I just fixed the wiki links! Proud Means that you can now again link to our wiki articles by writing the article title between double brackets, like this: [ [ Dragon Keeper ] ] (just remove the spaces!) which will turn out as [[Dragon Keeper]].

Mervi, should you see smilies in Quick Reply mode as well? I *can* see them in Reply but not in Quick Reply.

In QR there is only boxes for signature and disabling smilies and they are looking a bit funny as they are not straight.

No smilies at all in the quick reply. Smiling Yup, I noticed the boxes aren't lining up as they should - the same problem occurs at some profile pages.
