I would sooner think of these as old coteries within their dragons. They seem to be humanlike, fits even thought he felt a father figure in there... Chivalry? Im inclined to think that because the last time they told him better not come back til you're ready to stay after they said don't you have a home to go back to? and he struggled to think of molly. The concept of marriage and home wouldn't mean much to a dragon.

Also, Chade in the latest book after traveling through the pillars and spilling everywhere tells Fitz that in inside the pillar Shrewd was there talking to him in the skill, trying to entice him into joining him there. I think those with the skill ultimately become the river itself when they die...
