One more question for you, Valarya: the Steven Brust books I once snapped up from the bargain shelf happen to be the Khaavren books (The Phoenix Guards, Fuve Hundred Years After, etc.). Are those a good entry point, because I understand they're not the first ones written?

(And yes, I've heard that The Phoenix Guards basically copies the plot of The Three Musketeers. I've read and enjoyed that book, although not as much as The Count of Monte Christo.)

I wouldn't start with the Khaavren books at all. There's a lot about the world and magics you'll need to understand before reading those, I'd think. In fact, there are lots of Vlad Taltos books to read before you get to those. Just start at the beginning and read them in the order he published them.
