Both. It became most clear in DH when he took a stand at the two tributaries of the RW river. It became far clearer in CoD.

O.k., THAT is really something very special. For me up to now he was just a sort of secondary character. But I didn't read CoD yet (I'm still waiting...).

@Narya: Good to hear, that you start enjoing the book. For me it was a very detailed introduction into the Rain Wilds, the people, the hazards, the dragons and their fate continuing the scenery in the Lifeship Traders etc.). Dragon Haven is much faster and for me very exciting, because through DK everything became so familiar and dear to me.
