I suppose that it would depend on the monarch, to a certain extent. I cannot imagine myself being content to serve a foolish, spiteful king like Regal or even a weak king like Shrewd. I might be able to reconcile myself to serve a wise monarch, as long as he was willing to listen to my opinions and to allow me to act according to my conscience. Otherwise, I might have to turn kingmaker and find a monarch more to my liking...
As regards being part of a coterie, I think that some of us are just not pack animals. I would probably end up as a solo (like Fitz, Chade and Thick). I can also sympathise with Fitz over the conflict between heading a family and serving a monarch. I can't imagine ever being sufficiently loyal to my head of state that I would be willing to abandon my family.
A similar problem might arise from bonding with a dragon. Tintaglia demanded unhesitating loyalty, verging on worship, as her due. I can't imagine her being very sympathetic towards Selden's work/life balance...
