Well, with Fionavar the case is likely that the author wanted to use something Swedish but didn't bother to find out the meaning. (The world in the books is a mixture of other fantasy worlds and ancient legends.) With GRRM... I want to believe he knew what he was doing (so maybe it is a homage to Tolkien)... but even so it didn't work for me because it doesn't quite fit.
