I know what you mean about people tuning out once you start talking about fantasy books! I admit, I've read some awful fantasy, but also some truly amazing fantasy. But some readers have their minds set against it, and think its all the same.

I will admit to a certain amount of shyness in even bringing up a fantasy book when discussing books with friends. They don't get it and frankly don't want to get it. If someone asks me what I'm reading, if it's fantasy, I just say, "something Tolkienesque". Thankfully I'm reading on the Kindle, so I don't have to shamefully hide a hideous romance-novel-looking cover.
