There it is a feature called "newly registered users" group, which can have different permissions from "registered users". When user reaches a certain (configurable) post count, he/she/it is moved automatically to the latter group.

I might have a look and see what I can find out re MyBB as I managed to find the solution to the other problem for Mervi when the site crashed not so long ago. Either way, I will pass on all of this and any of my other findings to Mervi - thanks for the thoughtful and helpful suggestions!
