I don't watch television much anymore aside from some YouTube or Hulu clips so I'm not very up to date with all the new shows around.

Anyway some shows I like that I can think of right now:
3rd Rock From the Sun (the show has such an unusual premise that anything could happen)
The Drew Carey Show
Seinfeld (oh my god so hilarious.)
That 70s Show
French and Saunders (legends!!)
Frasier
What's My Line? (more of a game show but it's funny nonetheless)
I Love Lucy
Fresh Prince of Bel Air
King of the Hill
The Carol Burnett Show
The Simpsons (the older eps...the new ones are garbage)
The Colbert Report

Funny how I never got into Friends, considering how popular the show was back in the 90s...

I don't think it has been mentioned yet, and since the first season starts a rerun here tonight, I want to rec Flight of the Conchords! Big Grin

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but I wanted to mention this. I saw an episode of Friends a few days ago ("The One With The Stain") and I was amused that a few characters spoke some lines in Dutch. It was actually pronounced correctly, but the characters' American accent was so thick that it sounded really weird to me.

I wonder, though... if this episode is shown in English-language countries, are the Dutch parts subtitled? Or do Dutch viewers get some jokes that people from other countries don't? (Note on the video below: I'm not sure if the uploader added the subtitles or if they were already there.)

...Although the actor portraying Gunther can't quite manage the "ch" sound.

Hmm...I've watched most episodes of Friends and can't recall ever seeing subtitles. If nobody else can answer your question conclusively, AR , I will see if I can borrow that episode from a video store Smiling .

Aside from Friends, I rarely, if ever, see English-speaking TV shows or movies that contain subtitles for segments spoken in another language. It's usually just a matter of guesswork or being left in a state of wonder Uhhuh !

I remember that Friends episode! It's been a while since I've seen it, though. I can't remember if there are subtitles for the Dutch, but I do remember that when Phoebe speaks French in another episode there definitely are subtitles. That's the one where she attempts to teach Joey French.

AR, you said that the actors' American accents are thick when they're speaking their lines. I'm curious, when a non-native speaker is speaking Dutch, can you tell the difference between an English, American and Australian accent? Or do they all just have a similar "English-speaker" accent?

That is a very good question. The fact is, because Dutch is spoken not all that many people in the world, there aren't that many non-native speakers. I think I would be able to tell British speakers from American speakers. Not sure about Australian though - I am not very familiar with Australian accents.

The thing I find most surprising: They actually used Dutch, and not German. A lot of American movies which feature 'Dutch' actually use German phrases.

I haven't seen 'How I met your mother' mentioned yet. It's the only comedy show I enjoy watching at the moment.

Friends has used Dutch before on some occasions. It makes me wonder if one of the writers has been there for a while.

Although there was one episode with a Dutch girl. Before her nationality was revealed, I thought she was supposed to be French.
