It's not a place in the books, but I was watching a documentary about the legend of Merlin and heard that one of the castles referred to in the Arthurian stories is Tintagil Castle..... which reminded me of the name Tintaglia!

I've been to Tintagel (pronounced Tintajel) and climbed up the very big hill to the Tintagel castle ruins. It's very scenic and quite atmospheric, what with all the Arthur/Merlin stuff! It's in Cornwall, Southwest England, a beautiful part of the world..the Cornish coast is something to behold! Smiling

I like it! Clapping I love Tintaglia's name...not sure why but it's one of my 'dragon' favourites.

That all sounds amazing fool-ish!

I should think the name Tintagel stems from Cornwall's history as a tin-mining county. Though the Arthurian aspect of it is much more interesting! Dozmary Pool, supposedly the final resting place of Excalibur and home to the 'Lady of the Lake' is also in Cornwall, up on Bodmin Moor. And, warming to my subject now, some of Daphne Du Maurier's books are set there; Jamaica Inn (there is a pub on Bodmin moor of the same name) and Frenchman's Creek to name a but a couple (I'm sure there are more too) In fact I think Ms. Du Maurier lived in Cornwall, in a lovely little place called Fowey, pronounced Foy. Lucky lady! It is an inspiring county, particularly for creative types; writers, artists and the like and a wonderful place to spend a week or two for those like me who aren't remotely creative! Just thought I'd share this little bit of useless info. Smiling

I thought the home of the Lady of the lake (and the place where Avalon used to be) is around Glastonbury.

Oooh fool-ish that sounds wonderful! Another place to put on my holiday wish list!!!!
Joost I am no expert on the area, but I do know that apparently the legends around Merlin and Arthur changed a lot over time ..... there may be different areas that claim to be the location for various parts of the stories?

Joost you're right! Dozmary Pool is the supposed resting place of Excalibur but it was actually just an arm that appeared and took Excalibur down into the depths. My mistake, Avalon (Glastonbury) is Lady of the Lake territory.

Nuytsia, if you ever do get there, you won't regret it. It's lovely.

I think I am currently trying to dig up about eighty old posts but the problem with having dumped so many posts in these forums is that I can't even keep track of my own (no, the search function doesn't help me!), let alone anyone else's! Big Grin

Ah, here it is, in the 'Cats' thread...post #28. It's a little thing but I got so excited about it at the time as it just confirmed for me that Robin knows exactly where she's going with things.
