Sorry, I'm still trying to sift through your other post! P I'm pretty sure we were chatting about this in the Elderlings Creations thread? Though it could have been my question about why did they avoid the memory stone of the road and at Kelsingra and not the simulacra in the Stone Garden...I will check and get back!

Just a thought...

Possibly this other thing contributed to Fitz not doing too well while he was on it the first time? While he would have been affected by the Skill, as suggested by Kettle, and as we witnessed at the inn in Buck (when he and Fool were going after Dutiful) etc, possibly he experienced a little of the repulsion as felt by Nighteyes and the majority of other animals and life (there was also no life growing on the Skill Road, not just animals...just as there was no life growing near the path on Others' Island, though I brought that up in that EC thread or the OI thread too Blushing). If this is the case, Fitz would have experienced this extra force via his Wit magic, possibly making it a double whammy for him as he tread upon the road, and not just the Skill?

I'm pretty sure that Tintaglia even noted when she visited Kelsingra that 'nature will always win' or something along those lines. I know Nighteyes also mentioned something about the magic of the road constantly seeking to break out and be free from its containment...

I have much more to add on that and the relationship between the two but I have to actually sit down one day and write it all out carefully before I post it (it may take me so long that RH will have exposed all of her secrets by then...time is ticking on our ability to offer theories!!).

Oh! Hmm I'll check it out too. My memory is dreadful!
EDIT: I couldn't see anything specific about animals, but there was discussion of why plants grow on the stone garden animals but not on the Skill road etc.

Ahhh I hadn't really thought of that, I just assumed it was because he was susceptible to the Skill (by nature) but not very well trained in all the things he needed to know (like avoiding being affected by the Skill road). Then again, I think Kettle does say some 'don't make it' all the way along the road to carve their dragons..... so it must be that even the trained can be badly affected.
EDIT: Kettle actually states "If one were strong enough in the Skill, one could survive the trip up this road. But if she were not,she perished.”

My question is why did the makers of the Skill road make such a dangerous thing??? Some sort of test for those who would carve dragons? Why?
Or maybe just a side effect of the makers wanting the road to remain free of growing and dead plant material? (which is by no means proven?)

I doubt all the secrets will ever be revealed! Long live mystery!

RE: Small, random questions about RotE that still bother you - 'thul - Feb-08-2011

It is related to the time fitz saved the life of the fool, partially through the rooster crown...

RE: Small, random questions about RotE that still bother you - Nuytsia - Feb-08-2011

Can you spell it out for me or is this a guessing game?
If it is, I lost!

RE: Small, random questions about RotE that still bother you - 'thul - Feb-08-2011

the time fitz and the fool switched bodies, when fitz was bringing the fool back to life...

RE: Small, random questions about RotE that still bother you - Nightchade - Feb-11-2011

Just been reading all of these posts. Sorry more questions than answers! I know its going back a bit but re the 'broken' one. Do we know the overheard conversation was between Shrewd and Chade? Doesn't Fitz talk about it sounding like one person having a conversation with themselves? Could have been Shrewd arguing with himself or skilling to someone!

I have a question re the part in FE when the Fool and Fitz are staggering back after the incident where Nighteyes was healed by Fitz, the Fool helped to bring back Fitz etc. I had missed it first time around but it seems significant. The Fool is saying how he is 'sorrier than he can ever say' for using Fitz. After this...and the quote is:
'He turned his head as he spoke to me .The openness of that golden gaze combined with the bond between us, gold and silver twining. I recognised and rejected a truth I did not want to know' What is the truth he rejected ? that he was somewhat taken with the golden gaze? that he guessed the Fool was somewhat taken with him? something else?

...and what is it with the Fool and roses?

I guess my first thought was that Shrewd and Chade are brothers so they have similar sounding voices...... BUT yes I did wonder if we are supposed to take it more literally (that it sounded like one person having a conversation with themselves).
But when I thought about that it didn't seem to fit as well as the option that it's Shrewd and Chade.

Ok FE is by no means fresh in my mind, and I don't have a copy of it yet. But from what you've said there, I am guessing the truth he rejected was the realisation that the Fool used him ??

I can't remember him having a thing for roses! My memory is BAAAD!
I recall he seems to like flowers in general....Undecided

Sorry to add to the amount of questions being asked!
I was wondering about a few things relating to the maps...if anyone has any answers or even guesses it would help ease my curiosity.
1) Where exactly are the pirate isles? At first I thought that they were the islands along the Cursed Shores, like Last island, Shield Wall island, etc. Then it seemed like they weren't actually on the map as islands, but as a gray area that appeared to be mainland. Which one of these more closely matches the book?
2) Is it at all possible that Gernia and the Six Duchies/Bingtown continents are actually on the same world? Any hints to this or to the contrary?
3) Why aren't the OutIslands on the map?

Thanks to anyone who can help.
