I used to leave books pages-side down when I had to take a break from reading. However, now that I am older and wiser *cough cough* I have started to memorize the page number where I stopped... I guess I never got into the habit of using actual bookmarks. Oh, with hardcover books I sometimes use the flap of the dust jacket to keep my page.
I used to never dog-ear pages, but shamefully I have started to do so with Robin Hobb's books. Just so I could have my favorite moments right at my fingertips. Most of them have to do with meaningful moments between the Fool and his Fitz, though I do have a couple things from Fennel, and of course "Well then, I am Queen I-doubt-it-very-much of the Seven Dungheaps!"
When I do use a bookmark (an extremely rare occurrence), I use one from Greece that my church choir directer gave to us. Mostly because it's pretty and really lightweight.
