according to the Wiki "Maulkin himself was one of the reduced number of sea serpents who survived that journey and were able to produce a cocoon."
Then later one of the dragons who emerges from their case was Mercor, who is a male dragon, gold in colour and it is mentioned that he has some sort of marking on his neck where his false-eyes had been as a serpent. False-eyes are the mark of serpents who Remember, like Maulkin did, and the wiki states that he was "called Maulkin the Gold because of his golden false-eyes."
