The Neverending Story by Michael Ende just might be my favorite book of all time. Just try to get a decent edition that actually prints the text in red and blue. (There is a reason for this, be assured.)
The Old Kingdom books by Garth Nix. Start with the first one, Sabriel, which was orinally written as a standalone, so if you don't like it, at least you'll never have to read on just for the sake of finishing the trilogy (as I sometimes do). But I doubt you'll dislike it.
