What are you reading right now? (possible RotE spoilers)

Chrischa I like the idea of books set in other worlds, like those from video games. Although I've never actually got around to reading one!!!

There are quite many good books based on the games by blizzard entertainment (Diablo, Warcraft & Starcraft). These beings would recommend reading those books.

That's interesting to know, 'thul. My boys are WOW addicts and, although I don't play it myself, I do find the world, its characters and the storyline etc all very fascinating (I have even managed to choose a side...go Alliance!), and have often thought that a novel based on them would be a worthwhile read. At the very least it would encourage even more animated discussions at the dinner table! Will have to look into them, thanks.

Not enough time to dip into a book for myself (though that doesn't include RotE/SS re-reads...there are lots of small pockets of time to dip into those, even if they ARE at 3am in the morning!), but I have been reading my daughter 'The Cavern of the Fear', the first book of the second series of Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda.

I have spoken about it elsewhere on thePlenty but it really is just a wonderful fantasy series for kids (and their parents!). It is filled with it all...good vs evil, riddles, codes, royalty, quests, gems, maps, life-or-death battles, love, magic and, of course, dragons...!

One of the characters died today and what a mess we both were ...it was the first time through for my daughter but I'd already read the thing at least six times with my sons! In my defence, it is so much harder to keep the emotion locked inside when you're reading aloud!

So far the story is covered in fifteen books (spanning three series), with six other add-on books. I doubt there will ever be others but who knows what the Shadow Lord will do next...after all, "to its anger and envy a thousand years is like the blink of an eye" ! If you've got kids or nephews or nieces around the ages of 8 to 10, give them the first book 'The Forests of Silence' and a decade from now they'll have graduated to Robin Hobb and be chatting with you about all of your favourite RotE and SS books!

Just finished The Count of Monte Cristo. I liked it. I really liked it. But in a way, I'm glad it's now over. It was enjoyable, but it was HUGE. There is inevitably a point at which you just start thinking: "For goodness sake, just end already!"

So do I recommend it? Yes, but be prepared to spend a lot of time reading it.

Next up: The Armageddon Rag by GRRM.

Just finished The Armageddon Rag. Not sure what I should read now. I do have some unread stuff lying around. I don't feel like reading a big book yet - I'm still reeling from the enormousness that is The Count of Monte Cristo.

Since you're in a Dumas mood: 'The club Dumas' by Arthur Perez-Reverte. Perhaps you know the movie loosely based on the book: The ninth gate. But the book is much better.

I must admit that I've never heard of it. I'll check it out.

The Dutch publisher of The Count of Monte Cristo also published a translation of The Three Musketeers, but it appears to be out of print. Now what's that about? Surely the recent release of The Count of Monte Cristo can only increase interest?

It was a strange story. It's fantasy, but very low-key, and for the first half of the book there are no fantastical elements at all. It's about the reunion of a rockband, a subject that admittedly doesn't interest me very much - the fact that I did enjoy the novel is a testament to GRRM's skill. It's not his best novel, but it's not bad either. (Which I was expecting after learning of the fact that it didn't sell and nearly destroyed the poor guy's career.) Die-hard GRRM fans will have fun spotting some references to his previous works.
