I used to just use any scrap of paper that was lying around. However, I am now prevented from leaving scraps of paper around because my daughter eats them. She will even have a go at whole books if she gets her hands on them (not so much a bibliophile as a bibliophage). At the moment, I am using an unpaid electricity bill. The idea was that it would remind me to pay it but it does not seem to be working.

Ah but then my new problem becomes that hunger, work and maybe even unexpected fires must wait till I finish the chapter I'm on! ...unless it's a really big fire... :/

My second son had a thing about chewing tabletops and my daughter loved tearing the thin pages out of Yellow Pages phone books and consuming them. I'm not sure what's better...these things or cat nuts and the like (the sorts of things they progress to when older and a little more creative !).

I used to leave books pages-side down when I had to take a break from reading. However, now that I am older and wiser *cough cough* I have started to memorize the page number where I stopped... I guess I never got into the habit of using actual bookmarks. Oh, with hardcover books I sometimes use the flap of the dust jacket to keep my page. I used to never dog-ear pages, but shamefully I have started to do so with Robin Hobb's books. Just so I could have my favorite moments right at my fingertips. Most of them have to do with meaningful moments between the Fool and his Fitz, though I do have a couple things from Fennel, and of course "Well then, I am Queen I-doubt-it-very-much of the Seven Dungheaps!" When I do use a bookmark (an extremely rare occurrence), I use one from Greece that my church choir directer gave to us. Mostly because it's pretty and really lightweight.

I'm guessing (hoping) this phrase has some alternate meaning that I don't know about ......... On an unrelated note, NBW I sometimes use post-it notes to mark good bits in books without having to dog ear pages. I like to de-stickyfy them a bit first by sticking them on and pulling off again some scrap bit of paper.

I can't believe the bad habits I have developed since being here eg turning down pages on books (my Soldier's Son series looks like an origami collection!)!! Currently participating in a teleconference (!) so here are a couple of pics - the first one shows some of the bookmarks I have laying around the house (nowhere near all of them though...they are everywhere!) and the second one is my 'favourite'. Any guesses as to WHY it's my favourite ?!

I'm not sure what's better...these things or cat nuts Sorry, had missed this post...actually, it was my eldest son ! In Year Four (when he was about eight years old for those you outside of Queensland!), he had to write a short story based on a pet he'd once had. He chose a black cat, called Sarsy (short for Sarsaparilla), that he'd had the responsibility of feeding when he was about four or five. During the retelling, he revealed in detail how he would sneak out behind our meathouse every afternoon and nibble on some of the cat nuts, and also described my own dismay at how quickly the cat seemed to go through them (because, of course, I never knew he was supplementing his diet with them!). He thought it was a wonderful joke that he'd bested me for so long...I, on the other hand, thought the joke was pretty much on him really ! Wow that's a lot of bookmarks Farseer! Why it's your favourite? Did someone make it? I have no idea what 'cat nuts' are ..... am I alone in this? Is this one of those weird things where I have lived my entire life without coming across a commonly used phrase? The only thing I know of as cat nuts have been removed from my cats....

Yes, it was made by somebody but it's its colouring that I have come to love (as a consequence of digging into the RotE books)...red and blue !!! Ok, you've got me here...it's definitely a commonly-used phrase where I come from, and I can't for the life of me think of an alternative to give you! Funny how I was chatting with my kids only last night about how amazingly-different we Australians are, despite all growing up in the same country!!! Ah, *googles madly*, 'dried cat food' is the best I can do!!! What do YOU call them??!!
