Geees everyone's bookshelves are so well organised! I organise mine but then they get messed up so quickly......
I don't really make any effort to collect books or get nice looking copies. I buy when they come out in paperback and the price has dropped, OR I just get them out from the library to read....
I will take some pics soon of my bookshelves though.
Mervi ...... porridge ...... yum!
Farseer my sympathy to you - I hate moving!!!!! We still have books in boxes here, and I am too embarrassed to say how long ago we moved in.... How come you built a new house 1/4 size? That sounds like quite a challenge! The house we are in now is probably 2/3 size of the one we used to be in (although a tiny one rented in between, with everything stuffed into boxes). It's hard enough fitting our things in even so!! I can't even imagine 1/4 !

Hey Nuytsia,

I've missed you guys, and haven't you all been BUSY while I've been off-line?! So many great posts for me to wade through Clapping ! *Not a spoiler but an overly long off-topic post I'm saving you from!*
[+]Spoiler

The homestead we lived in previously was very old and was actually two houses that had been joined together to make one HUGE homestead. It had at least eight, way-larger-than-your-usual bedrooms though we used a couple of these for other purposes eg a school radio room and adjoining schoolroom for my kids' School of the Air lessons.

It also had a large laundry; enormous kitchen/dining area with a large walk-in coldroom that covered one of the walls; family room with plenty of space for a lounge suite, daybed, fish tank, stereo, pool table, dartboard etc; walk-in pantry; large room where we stored extra freezers and fridges; extra playroom for the kids; office; bathroom and toilets; two internal verandahs (one almost as big as half of our current house!) and quite a few other rooms we used for storage etc.

The story goes that two brothers once lived on the property and didn't get along, or had a falling out (all way before my time!!), so they built a second house attached to the original dwelling and so thereafter lived side-by-side, yet apart (on 135,000 acres of land you'd reckon they'd have been a little spoilt for choice with regards to the position of the second house so I'm not sure why they chose to live side-by-side when they couldn't stand the sight of each other!). They had everything they needed on their own side so, subsequently, we had an eastern-most bedroom that housed a massive, old wood stove in it P !

It was all getting run down so needed replacing, I guess (I was out-voted when it came to the crunch Crying !). I am very old-fashioned so really miss it and its 'country' character, with its lovely polished floors and open, breezy rooms but, on the very optimistic side, we have kept quite a bit of the wood (silky oak doorframes etc) so think of all the gorgeous BOOKSHELVES we could make!

As for the size of the current house, it is a run-of-the-mill, standard-sized Glendale home that was transported on trucks from Townsville to the property, and planted only a metre or two from the eastern-most point of the old house (we were still pulling the old one down at the time). As far as houses go, I guess it would be considered quite large with four bedrooms; a large, open dining, lounge and kitchen area; coldroom; a whole room off the kitchen shelved for a pantry; office; laundry; bathroom and ensuite (ok, so it sounds more than adequate when I list it like that!) BUT, it is still like a little box compared to the old one and most of our possessions are now sitting in old shearing quarters in the next paddock.

Hmm...I feel rather silly now and no doubt you all think I am ever so spoilt Blushing ...living out here in the middle of nowhere, I guess I do tend to take space for granted! Not deserving of sympathy at all Ouch!!

Moving on...(!!)...I think worse than moving is moving a couple of metres away, handful by handful, as opposed to by truck but will get there in the end and, no doubt, it will feel more homey when I do.

Welcome back!! Was wondering where you'd got to Detective
Wow your old house/s must have been HUGE. I hope you hadn't filled all the available space with stuff (as seems to be the general rule of thumb!)
I can see that your new house isn't at all small - just smaller than huge!
Interesting history too.
I often wonder what the heck happened on our property in the past. There weren't any old houses still standing but there are small indications of activity like bolts in the side of old trees, rose bushes in the middle of nowhere, sawdust piles, railway sleeper type bits of wood etc.
Whoa you had your house moved from Townsville! I knew it had to be some major operation to have a new house built where you are. I cringe at the thought of the logistics! (and cost)
I thought you could just use your old house for storage but you demolished it! Wow I would love a humungous old house next to mine for storage!! We don't even have a proper shed. I NEED MORE STORAGE!
Heheh your storage is old shearing quarters, mine is currently a hayshed!

It could be said that Nuytsia and I destroyed this great thread with our terribly off-topic and lengthy rambling Whistling ! If you haven't already, can you please post some pics of your bookshelves to get it going again (and so I don't have to feel so guilty!)?

And to add insult to injury, I haven't even posted a pic of my bookshelves yet!

Well, these aren't all of my books. i cleared some shelves not long ago so there's free space i need to fill. These are just the books in my room. not including the ones in my mom's library, the ones in my siblings' library and the ones i loaned to friends (like Assassin's Apprentice). oh, and Dragon Keeper which is on my bed.
Robin Hobb is on long top shelf.

i should really reorganize my shelves and gather my books from around the house.

Thanks for saving us, FoolMoon Thankful, and you've got a great collection there!! I was particularly interested in seeing 'Dante', especially as I've just finished Jodi Picoult's 'The Tenth Circle'...a novel featuring plenty of Dante references!

These beings decided to share their physical bookshelves.

The latter image is based around a crate of trench dynamite.

when 'thul write in all italics, it is the lord of the three realms within 'thul speaking. A fairly egoistical, but also somewhat simple-minded dragon. Do not take such posts at face value.
