Well, I finished The Steel Remains earlier today. It's a brutal, violent book, but I did enjoy it quite a lot. One of the things that got on my nerves, though, was how foulmouthed it was. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a prude or easily offended, but if every fucking character talks this way the whole fucking book, the fucking word quickly loses any meaning and is just there to fill some fucking space. Every character during the whole book, got that, motherfucker?

Reading the book, I had a flashback to Ship of Destiny. You know the instance I'm talking about:

[+]Click to see who swore in Ship of Destiny
"Fuck you, Wintrow!" - Althea

One instance of the word in an 800-page book and it was so much more meaningful than it was in TSR. The sequel, The Cold Commands, is coming out next month, but I'm going to wait for the paperback and read some of Richard Morgan's SF novels in the meantime.

Oh, well said! I firmly agree!! And, yes, that one instance in LST was shocking in its singularity...I think I even gasped and had to do a few sentence re-reads I was that surprised! Smiling

I think this was one of the things that irritated me about The Night Angel trilogy...just an observation though, not another Brent Weeks bashing! Surrender Big Grin

Umberto Eco - Het eiland van de vorige dag (The island of the day before)

I think this is Eco's worst book, but there are some interesting things in it anyway.

Now reading The Riven Kingdom by Karen Miller, second book in the Godspeaker trilogy. I hope it will work out better than Empress, of which I loved the first half but became rather bored during the second half. At least we're now away from Mijak with its highly formaized speech patterns...

These beings finished reading "the infinity gate" late yesterday (or probably more properly, early this morning)...

It was a most excellent book and a worthy end to the storyline.

I just finished reading Karen Miller's The Riven Kingdom. It was better than its predecessor Empress, but still not entirely satisfactory. It strikes me as a very overwritten book. It's a relatively thin storyline that is stretched out to 744 pages and it suffers for it. There are far too many conversations hitting the same points over and over again. This could have been a great story with better editing. I'll check out the finale Hammer of God later (And isn't that one of the coolest titles ever?). For now, I think I'll take Jacqueline Carey's Banewreaker off the to-read pile.

Into the third book in my 'True Blood' omnibus edition. Much excitement though, A Storm of Swords (part 1) is winging it's way to me as we speak!

Good choice, joost. I love all the Pern books. Clapping I particularly liked "Moreta".
Has anyone mentioned Wizard's First Rule etc, yet? Did anyone see the TV version? What did you think? I was not impressed.

Wizard's first rule (and the rest of the series) is very, very good. The [insert applicable insults] TV show made from it, very, very bad.

These beings are now reading "glenraven" by Marrion Zimmer Bradley & Holly Lisle. Fairly strange, but also interesting so far.
